Description

This essay explores the prose writings of Richard Griffith (d. 1788), from the first instalment of A Series of Genuine Letters between Henry and Frances (1757) to Something New (1772). Despite being neglected by modern scholars, Griffith's miscellaneous publications constitute a fascinating body of writing, which is situated here in three main ways: generically, nationally, and in terms of the canon (and Irish studies specifically). Contrary to critical assumptions, Griffith was no simple imitator (or indeed forger) of Laurence Sterne. Rather, as this essay shows, Griffith's writings usefully problematize our modern understandings of genre divisions, authorial identities, and national literatures. **********
